Chapter 23

Roman tightened his arm around my shoulders and pulled me in tighter to his chest. He didn’t like my anxiety but I could feel his radiating like the afternoon sun on a hot summer’s day. I let him pull me close to him, resting my head on his chin and listening to the questions and comments being thrown around the group.

I eyed the airport food court, watching the steady stream of people move around us and hurry to their destinations. The smell of grease and starch came from every food establishment around us. Alex was polishing off my uneaten fries and also keeping a close eye on me through the discussion.

“I mean, where the hell could this guy have come from? We know he’s not one of us.” Gavin rolled his burger wrappers together and tossed them on the table. There was a constant underlying level of frustration in his mind that he wouldn’t let me soothe or even help me understand why it was there.

“How do we know that?” Alex asked, sucking the salt off of his fingers.

“Because only we,” Pierce made a circular motion with his hand to indicate all of us, “are the only ones with the extra strength and speed of our people.”

“And the ability to heal,” Roman added.

“If Jade was missing a Victri we would know it by now.” Kyson sat back in his chair with his arms folded. His expression was calm, his shoulders relaxed. But it was a lie. Kyson was always the best at hiding his tension.

I brought my foot up to my seat and pulled my knee in close to my chest. “And what are we, actually, planning to do with him?” I glanced around at all of the guys. “Are we really going to turn him in? Or kill him?”

Roman’s mind tilted towards panic. “We don’t turn him in. We can’t.”

Pierce raised a hand towards Roman. “We aren’t deciding anything right now. These are choices we can’t make until we are with him.”

Gavin scoffed, folding his arms. “We can’t take him with us. It would be like rescuing a feral dog.”

“What if there are others like him?” I asked, ignoring Gavin.

Roman’s hand rubbed at my shoulder. “From what I saw, there are no others.”

“At least that our government knows about,” Pierce said.

“But...we’re going to try to talk to him, right?” I continued. “Before doing anything...drastic?”

Gavin shook his head, his jaw clicking. “I don’t want to give him a chance to do anything.”

“I agree,” Alex boomed. “Let’s kill first, and ask questions later.”

My head tilted to the side as I looked at Alex in confusion. “That...doesn’t make any sense.”

“We won’t risk your safety, Empress.”

I turned to Kyson, the corners of my mouth pulling down. I pinned him with a look that told him not to call me that again anytime soon.

“Empress?”

My eyebrows shot up as I jerked to the left. A young woman with olive toned skin and large brown eyes rimmed with black eyeliner and long lashes stopped next to our group.
